Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular calls from the official, echoing the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
