Administration officials disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.

While the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker said. “Starting next week, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups sought a court injunction to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the government to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, citing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

These terminations occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck covering the end of September but excluding the start of October, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
