From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, demons, and sinister influences increasing in influence within the urban setting.
Note: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season follow below.
The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced
Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the initial group of heroes who will separate from the main group to embark on their separate journey, separate from the other two tables.
The Soldiers table consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan (the actor).
Why Split the Party?
With 13 cast members, it was evident from the outset that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.
Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, intertwining the individual narratives before branching into three separate parties: Soldiers, Strategists, and Questers.
What Defines the Combat Party
As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for participants who are drawn to a traditionally charged battle-oriented narrative style where non-violent answers are few and far between.
Upon first impression, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might appear out of place, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the combat party.
Motivations for Departure
First, the party understands precisely where to head next after a intense initial meeting with the antagonists.
An old friend of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the story’s plot—used the foes for his personal gain, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting Thimble, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.
The antagonist then settled his obligations and fled to a fortified location in the northern region, beyond the urban center, with Cyd close behind.
Character Drivers
Additionally, each character has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:
- The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, desires vengeance.
- Kattigan is familiar with the region and cautions that it is a hostile location.
- Tyranny and The cleric, having disobeyed his house’s orders to execute the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
- But, their status as key figures in the influential clan could help the party enter locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Additionally, Teor vowed a unbreakable promise to The cleric for his rescue and will now accompany him everywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making staying in the city dangerous:
- Thimble and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
- Tyranny and Wicander betrayed House Halovar and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
- The target is wanted dead by the clan.
This means them few options but to journey toward the northern region in pursuit of the antagonist.
Future Episodes
From episode three’s follow-up content, we learn that the warrior group won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight participants to round up the Explorers and Planners parties.
Fans can expect finding out which characters will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
